Description

Designed for both Māori and non-Māori, experienced practitioners and new learners, language speakers and non-language students, this course takes participants on a journey of exploration to a high level of proficiency in Kapa Haka, Te Reo Māori, Tikanga & Kawa, and Mau Rākau, with a distinct focus on the styles and traditions of Te Tairāwhiti. Course content includes the study of the mythological and traditional origins and customs of Māori weaponry, specifically the taiaha and exploring other conventional weapons unique to Te Tairawhiti. Students will explore combat techniques, defensive movements, stances, and the more profound significance of Mau Rakau from Te Tairāwhiti.

The course also covers the roles of male warriors, the importance of Tikanga, and the whakapapa of renowned East Coast Mau Rākau practitioners and warriors. Practical training will allow participants to develop not only physical skills but also mental resilience, discipline, and the ability to embody the values of local iwi and hapū. The programme highlights the renaissance of Mau Rākau in Te Tairāwhiti and its place in contemporary Māori society, providing a unique perspective rooted in the whenua and its people. A particular emphasis is placed on the distinctive Tairāwhiti styles of Mau Rākau, incorporating historical and sacred teachings passed down through generations.
